People Who Studied Abroad #119:Augusta Savage, artist

From:
United States

Studied:
In 1923, Savage applied for a summer program in France to study art where she was rejected because of her race. She later won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, but was unable to raise money for travel and living expenses and therefore did not attend. Knowledge of Savage’s talent and struggles spread through the African-American community. African-American women’s groups held fundraising parties and the Julius Rosenwald Fund sent her money to support her studies abroad. In 1929, Savage enrolled and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France where she studied with the sculptor Charles Despiau.
