He is known to have taught at University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), and may have also been a student there. He graduated as Doctor of Divinity at the University of Turin (Italy). Erasmus is also the namesake of the Erasmus Programme, which promotes mobility between European universities by giving students the opportunity to study or do internships in another European country. (The protagonist and many of the supporting characters in L’Auberge Espagnole are participants in the Erasmus Programme, and the protagonist even meets Erasmus in a dream sequence.)
