People Who Studied Abroad #391:
Davis Tarwater, Olympic gold medalist (swimming)
Tarwater earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and swam at the University of Michigan, then retired from swimming after the 2009 season to concentrate on his graduate studies. He earned an MSc in Latin American Studies at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and swam for Oxford while he was there, then returned to international competition after completing his degree in 2010.
In a great interview with USA Swimming, Tarwater said:
It probably doesn’t get much better than Oxford was for me. It was the best year of my life, and I think I got everything out of it that I possibly could have. I would encourage anyone who has a chance to live overseas for a little while, or go to school and study abroad, to take advantage of that, because it is so eye opening and cool.
