People Who Studied Abroad #398:Isambard Kingdom Brunel, mechanical and civil engineer, chief engineer of the Great Western Railway, and named #2 in a 2002 poll of the “100 Greatest Britons”

Studied:
At age 14, Brunel enrolled at the College of Caen in Normandy, France (his father’s country of birth) then at Lycée Henri-Quatre in Paris, where he completed his studies in 1822.  He applied to attend the École Polytechnique but they would not accept a foreigner.  Instead, he apprenticed with clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet before returning to England.

[Brunel was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony.]
