People Who Studied Abroad #398:
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, mechanical and civil engineer, chief engineer of the Great Western Railway, and named #2 in a 2002 poll of the “100 Greatest Britons”
At age 14, Brunel enrolled at the College of Caen in Normandy, France (his father’s country of birth) then at Lycée Henri-Quatre in Paris, where he completed his studies in 1822. He applied to attend the École Polytechnique but they would not accept a foreigner. Instead, he apprenticed with clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet before returning to England.
[Brunel was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony.]
