Fictional Character Who Studied Abroad #58:
Various characters, Hickory Dickory Dock (by Agatha Christie)
The book centers around a student hostel in London managed by the sister of Hercule Poirot’s secretary, Miss Lemon. Residents of the hostel include:
- Gopal Ram - an Indian student (mentioned several times, but not a central character)
- Sally Finch - an American Fulbright scholar (pictured above, she is the only one of the foreign students who appears in the 1995 television adaptation of the novel, and - without spoiling the episode too much - let’s say that her character is significantly altered from the book)
- Elizabeth Johnston - a well-liked law student from Jamaica with the “best brains in the Hostel”
- Mr Akibombo - a West African student who is good friends with Sally Finch
- Chandra Lal - an Indian medical student who is quick to attribute slights and cultural misunderstandings to racial prejudice
- Miss Reinjeer - a Dutch student who is mentioned in passing
- Achmed Ali - a “frightfully political” student from Egypt
- Geneviève Maricaud - a passionate French student studying English
- René Halle - a “supercilious and uncooperative” Frenchman studying English
- Two recently-arrived unnamed Turkish students with poor English
- An unnamed “stolid and suspicious Dutchman”
- An unnamed “charming young Iraqi”
