People Who Studied Abroad #60:Seretse Khama, first president of Botswana

From:
Botswana (then British Protectorate of Bechuanaland)

Studied:
Studied in boarding schools in South Africa and received his B.A. from the University of Fort Hare (also South Africa). Spent a year at Balliol College, Oxford (United Kingdom).

While working as a barrister in England, Seretse Khama married a white English woman, Ruth Williams. Their interracial marriage sparked an international uproar (especially in South Africa and Great Britain) that resulted in Seretse Khama being removed from his chieftanship and the Khamas being exiled from Bechuanaland from 1951-56. By the time of Botswana’s independence in 1966, he had worked his way back up through the political system as a private citizen to become the first President of Botswana, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the same year.

I think it’s a pretty interesting story!
