People Who Studied Abroad #69:
Sessue Hayakawa, actor
From:
Japan
Studied:
Spent two years at the University of Chicago (United States) before dropping out and beginning his film career.
Hayakawa’s career is an interesting one to read about. He started his own production company, partially because he was upset with the ways Asians were typecast in movies. He was a popular leading man in the silent era, but the introduction of the Hays Code’s anti-miscegenation rules in 1930 meant that he could then only play opposite Asian actresses or take non-romantic supporting/villain roles. He also participated in the French resistance in WWII.
