People Who Studied Abroad #626:
Linda Richards, one of the first professionally-trained American nurses and a pioneer of nursing education in the US and Japan
She began her training in Boston in the inaugural class of the first American nurses’ training school. Later she wanted to improve her skills and in 1877 she undertook a seven-month training program at the Nightingale School at St. Thomas Hospital in London, England (now part of King’s College, London). She lived in Japan between 1885 and 1890 and helped to establish nurse-training programs there.
