10. My food has eyes!
If you order almost any kind of seafood, expect for it to be looking back at you. All of the fish and shrimp here have eyes on them in the grocery store and when you go to a restaurant. You rarely see this in the US so it definitely takes some getting used to. They also eat squid here, which you rarely hear about people eating in the US. I tried the fried squid, called calamari, and it was actually pretty darn tasty lol! It looks similar to a thick onion ring.
Yecccccchhhhh, eyes! I am very open to trying new things in other countries, but I still have a problem when my food is watching me eat it.

There are a lot of volunteering opportunities available here through the study center. However, when I realized that one of my professors was a doctor and worked at a local clinic I just knew I had to at least ask for the chance to gain some clinical experience abroad. Since I speak a little Spanish and I want to be a doctor he quickly agreed and thought it was a great idea. All I had to do was talk to my volunteer coordinator in the study center and it was set!…

Whether it was a strategic move of Starbucks to nestle itself right under my study abroad program’s building, or a mere coincidence (I’m going to go with the latter) it is interfering with something you may know as “study abroad.”
There are a few reasons why you shouldn’t be sipping from that glorified cup of that mermaid-logo coffee. You’ve heard the typical reasons like; it’s way overpriced and you’re drinking more sugar and cream than actual coffee. Apart from these facts (which I have been ignoring forever, since I am a fervent Starbucks coffee-goer myself) there is another concept that causes a voice to abrupt in my mind as if it is been delivered to me by a megaphone: “STEP AWAY FROM THE STARBUCKS.”…
Eating and drinking like the locals is a good way to learn about the culture you’re visiting!

During my first months of living in Spain, I was absolutely perplexed as to how I was so easily identified as an American. (My hair isn’t that light! Jeez!) Since then, I’ve picked up on some of the clues that give us away as outsiders.
- black Northface jackets
- workout clothes
- boys in baggy…
